SUSAN KELLEY
– When painting a portrait, I try to capture not only a likeness, but a glimpse of the inner person in a moment of thought - creating a drawing or painting, you can appreciate without having known the subject. When painting landscapes, I look for natural compositions and the excitement I feel for nature when I find them. Many times it is the smash of light on nature that brings out the beauty of the ordinary that I wish to pass on to the viewer.
I am very attracted to the genre paintings of the Boston School Painters, and the beauty they found in everyday moments. I love Cape Ann; it offers endless painting subjects to me, as it did to many artists before. |
