TOM SUTHERLAND – Watercolor painting is my passion. I love to make my brushes dance across the paper, painting what I feel – not necessarily what I actually see. My paintings are an impressionistic and very personal statement of what is before me.
My main goal is to simplify the scene into its basic shapes and values, then apply the paint in one go, creating a fluid and spontaneous painting. Atmosphere and light play an important role in my paintings. Whether painting en plein air or in studio, these qualities are always paramount to the success of my work. I want my paintings to be enjoyable to look at and to give the impression of containing lots of detail, when in reality the detail is supplied by the viewer.
