10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Registration Deadline: March 30, 2019 | REGISTER NOW

This workshop will embrace the painting process and the importance of daily practice as a path to improving creativity and image making skills. Over the course of the workshop students will paint approximately 10 panels, guided by an artist who has made over 3,500 daily, consecutive, paintings - so far! A combination of demos, in-class assignments and individual instruction will teach students techniques to create fresh, deliberate marks. Using acrylic or oil paint students will discover approaches to simplify the process of painting and ways to stay inspired and motivated.

Lisa Daria Kennedy grew up along the northeast edge of the Hockomock Swamp in Massachusetts. Since 2009, she has committed to an on-going daily painting project. As a young adult cancer survivor, she discovered living is not just surviving. Each painting seeks to give a voice to the fiber of the everyday.

Kennedy received a BA from Roger Williams University, a BFA and MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Currently she is the Design Editor for the literary publication, Mount Hope and an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA.

Rosalie Sidoti will help you become more spontaneous and expressive in your painting and teach you how this freedom is linked to creating an exciting work of art. Rosalie will emphasize, via a short demo, that there should also be a firm foundation of structure in your paintings using shape, value, color, edges and center of interest. All who attend will be able to apply the lessons learned to their own style of painting. This workshop is for oils specifically.

Though painting on site comes with its own set of challenges, it is the artist’s surest way to learn how to create the feeling of “being there” in their painting. In this two-day workshop, we will focus on choosing and designing a composition that leads you into the painting and using values and color temperature to create the feeling of light on your canvas.

Each day will start with a discussion of technique and philosophy and a short demonstration. Students will then have the opportunity to paint, receiving individual instruction at each step. Our goal is to not only to produce better plein air paintings, but to gain new insights that will inform our studio work.

This is an oil painting workshop, but students are welcome to paint in a different medium if they choose.

They have two sources: (1) photographs Otto took in 2003 that were affixed to house walls in the medieval district of Mouraria, Lisbon, and (2) variations of self-portraits Otto took in Lisbon in 2009.

“My goal has been to evoke a symbolic – rather than realistic – sense of the person in focus. I’ve treated my photographic materials as components of an imagined portrait that unites the person portrayed with his or her surroundings and circumstances. In doing so, I’ve disregarded conventional boundaries between photography, painting, and graphics.”
