From Sketchbook to Canvas: The Process of Aldro T. Hibbard, N.A. (1886 – 1972)

Long revered for his New England winter landscapes, the work of Aldro Hibbard has enchanted collectors for more than a century. Bold, scenic, endlessly inventive… Yet the question remains: How did Hibbard build his masterpieces? How did he move from firsthand observations of his environment towards his final painted compositions? In this revolving exhibition of sketches just released from the Hibbard Estate paired with a selection of his masterful paintings, we are now afforded the chance to not only see how Hibbard conceived and built his compositions, but to own them as well.

August 17 through September 23, 2019, in the Marguerite Pearson Gallery

Andrew Anderson-Bell Solo Show:
LAYERS OF PASTEL

September 28 – October 10, 2019 in the Marguerite Pearson Room
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 28th, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Native to the New England area, Andrew Anderson-Bell is a representational landscape artist painting in the medium of pastel. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Andrew initially pursued graphic design and photography. While these remain passions to this day, his interest in painting in pastel was sparked by viewing a pastel exhibition he saw 20 years ago. The immediacy of the medium, the vibrancy of the colors and the diversity of mark making inspired him to pursue a career in pastel painting. Where Andrew lives keeps him in daily contact with the great outdoors, his leading source for artistic inspiration. His paintings offer the viewer the indulgence of a meditative space to contemplate the grandeur of nature and reinforce the notion that even the most solitary and tranquil moments have significance.

IN THE MOMENT: THE PAINTINGS OF CHARLES MOVALLI – GALLERY TALK with STAPLETON KEARNS

"I saw Charles Movalli give a talk in the Aldro Hibbard gallery of the Rockport Art Association in 1984. (I got in for free as I was the janitor there at the time.) I thought I knew painting pretty well. I left that lecture shocked by all I didn’t know... The next morning, I got up and went to work to learn all of the things I had heard him describe. That evening changed my life."

~Stapleton Kearns

Through his teaching, lectures, and writing Charles Movalli taught countless people about art. His paintings are enjoyed in the homes of thousands of collectors and he has taken his well-earned place in the history of Cape Ann painting. There are many artists working today who had their eyes opened to new possibilities by Charles Movalli.

Join us on October 9, 2019 from 7 - 8:30PM as the celebrated Stapleton Kearns--one of those artists who was so deeply moved by Charles Movalli--offers us an intimate glimpse into the methods and very soul of one of Cape Ann's most celebrated painters of the last half century. Stapleton will be leading us on a gallery walk through the In the Moment: The Art of Charles Movalli exhibition in our Hibbard and Maddox galleries, sharing precious insights into Charles Movalli's work and life.

This gallery talk is presented in partnership with our good friends at Cape Ann Plein Air. To find out more about them, we cordially invite you to click their website link here: https://capeannpleinair.com/

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP MEETING: GUEST SPEAKER BERND HAUSSMANN

Guest Speaker: Bernd Haussmann

There is no good art or bad art. All is experiencing. So if we say "like" or "don't like", if we start comparing, we will not be able to fully access art. We stay on the surface. Art has no message. It is not a commodity, not an object. Art is an experience.

With my art I try to add to our experiencing. The quality of art or, if we eliminate the word art altogether and just call it 'experiencing', then we could say the quality of experiencing is dependent on the quality of our presence, our ability to opening up and to surrender to what is.

If meditation can be an anchor to be present then art (experiencing) can be the grounding for it. Art goes beyond the image, beyond perception. It is not about pictures, it is about enhancing the quality of experiencing life.

What I see is never what you see. And what I saw is not what is.

There is no single truth in art. It’s all experiencing. And it always starts with the individual viewer. And that viewer’s willingness to see. And that, of course, goes beyond the visible.

~Bernd Haussmann

A big component of the Experimental Art Group (EG) of RAA&M is to invite artists speakers who are not members of the group. EG presentations are open to all and free to the public thus fulfilling our mission to increase the awareness of experimental art in our communities and foster ongoing communication amongst our membership. There is no separation between art and life. Everything is connected.

ARTIST DEMONSTRATION: BRUCE JOHNSON, A.W.S - WATERCOLOR

“My watercolors mostly deal with technique, color, design and an image that may not be there tomorrow. I begin with a very quick pencil sketch. A watercolor is very spontaneous and there is constant movement of color and water on paper. They can be very physical because of the speed at which you have to work. Decisions and corrections are constantly being made, and that creates intensity, involvement, and sometimes frustration. The versatility of watercolor allows you to be very free or very controlled. The technique itself can become more important than the subject.”

Artist Demonstrations will be held in the Hibbard Gallery.

THE PAINTED VILLAGE: STREET SCENES from the RAA&M PERMANENT COLLECTION

The Painted Village: Street Scenes from the RAA&M Permanent Collection

The sleepy lanes and quiet byways of Cape Ann have drawn visitors to this region since the mid-nineteenth century. Along these meandering thoroughfares, artist and tourist alike have been afforded a glimpse of a rustic, seemingly simpler way of life far different from the noise and banality of the modern world they come from. Here can yet be heard an echo of earlier times, one thick with the associations of close-knit neighborhoods, warm friendships, and quaint village ways.

In this exhibition—drawn from the RAA&M’s rarely-viewed permanent Museum collection—visitors can behold bucolic images of Cape Ann’s timeless streets. Viewers are also encouraged to compare how much has—and has not—changes in the years since these familiar avenues were first captured on the painted canvas.

ARTIST DEMONSTRATION: EMILY PASSMAN - ACRYLIC PAINTING

Emily (Osman) Passman is a painter of oils and acrylics, exhibiting throughout the greater-Boston area and New England. Emily's still lifes and landscapes maintain realism without losing a sense of the abstract. After earning both a fine arts degree and an M.A. in education, Emily had a successful career as an elementary school teacher, then graphic designer, and now devotes her time entirely to painting and sketching.

Colors, shapes, lines, and values excite me whether I use them loosely or in a more controlled manner. If my canvas has the feel of my sketchbook I feel satisfied. I feel success when my canvas feels as inspiring as the subject. ~Emily Passman
