  • Rockport Art Association & Museum 12 Main Street Rockport, MA, 01966 United States (map)

October 27, 2018 - November 25, 2018
OPENING RECEPTION : November 3, 2018, from 5 - 7 PM

Once called “the greatest black-and-white artist in America,” by no less an expert than Andrew Wyeth, Stow Wengenroth (1906-1978) is still considered, almost a half century after his death, the premier lithographer of New England, if not America. And this is not an empty accolade or even regional pride, but an honest observation of a body of work created during a successful career spanning some five decades.

Today, forty years after his death, Stow Wengenroth is lauded as a man of Arts and Letters, as well as a lithographer of the finest caliber, who could evoke the atmosphere of a crisp or foggy New England day with his superb renditions of the natural world, as well as man-made structures; a testament to the American spirit of the last century.

Wengenroth as a great artist who “graced our lives with his warmth and artistic genius and for this our lives have all been enriched,” while John W. Pettibone, the RAA curator, remembered the artist as “a tall, lean gregarious man and a keen observer of nature, who had a dry sense of humor that peppered his incisive remarks and who was a perfectionist in his work.”
