THE PAINTED VILLAGE: STREET SCENES from the RAA&M PERMANENT COLLECTION

The Painted Village: Street Scenes from the RAA&M Permanent Collection

The sleepy lanes and quiet byways of Cape Ann have drawn visitors to this region since the mid-nineteenth century. Along these meandering thoroughfares, artist and tourist alike have been afforded a glimpse of a rustic, seemingly simpler way of life far different from the noise and banality of the modern world they come from. Here can yet be heard an echo of earlier times, one thick with the associations of close-knit neighborhoods, warm friendships, and quaint village ways.

In this exhibition—drawn from the RAA&M’s rarely-viewed permanent Museum collection—visitors can behold bucolic images of Cape Ann’s timeless streets. Viewers are also encouraged to compare how much has—and has not—changes in the years since these familiar avenues were first captured on the painted canvas.

August 10 through September 9, 2019, in the Martha Moore Room
