IN THE MOMENT: THE ART OF CHARLES MOVALLI – Gallery Talk with Dale Ratcliff

The Rockport Art Association and Museum proudly announces an important and massive exhibition of paintings by the late Charles Movalli (1945-2016)--one of Cape Ann's most famous and exciting artists. The show will include nearly one hundred and fifty of his paintings, few of which have been recently exhibited. A special section will be devoted to his more experimental and adventurous works. Colorful, accessible, and boldly executed, all the paintings will be available for collectors to purchase.

GALLERY TALK with Stapleton Kearns and T.M. Nicholas

IN THE MOMENT: THE PAINTINGS OF CHARLES MOVALLI – Gallery Talk with Stapleton Kearns and T.M. Nicholas, in collaboration with Cape Ann Plein Air

"I saw Charles Movalli give a talk in the Aldro Hibbard gallery of the Rockport Art Association in 1984. (I got in for free as I was the janitor there at the time.) I thought I knew painting pretty well. I left that lecture shocked by all I didn’t know... The next morning, I got up and went to work to learn all of the things I had heard him describe. That evening changed my life."

~Stapleton Kearns

Through his teaching, lectures, and writing Charles Movalli taught countless people about art. His paintings are enjoyed in the homes of thousands of collectors and he has taken his well-earned place in the history of Cape Ann painting. There are many artists working today who had their eyes opened to new possibilities by Charles Movalli.

Join us on October 9, 2019 from 7 - 8:30PM as the celebrated Stapleton Kearns--one of those artists who was so deeply moved by Charles Movalli--offers us an intimate glimpse into the methods and very soul of one of Cape Ann's most celebrated painters of the last half century. Stapleton will be leading us on a gallery walk through the In the Moment: The Art of Charles Movalli exhibition in our Hibbard and Maddox galleries, sharing precious insights into Charles Movalli's work and life.

UPDATE: Stapleton Kearns will be joined by his friend and fellow artist T.M. Nicholas for this important and educational RAA&M Gallery Talk.

This gallery talk is presented in partnership with our good friends at Cape Ann Plein Air. To find out more about them, we cordially invite you to click their website link here: https://capeannpleinair.com/

John Pettibone is originally from Ohio, but moved to Rockport in 1965. Shortly after, he was on the staff at the Rockport Art Association (1969-1978).  He later served as Assistant Curator of Collections and Education at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA (1978-1983).  More recently, he retired as Curator of Education and Executive Director of the Hammond Castle Museum in Gloucester, MA (1983-2016).

John first met Stow Wengenroth the summer he arrived in Rockport from Ohio.  Stow Wengenroth was staying at the Granite Shore Inn up the street from the Rockport Art Association.  John originally was introduced to the work of Wengenroth by his grandmother who spent several decades summering on Cape Ann and knew most of the artists living and working there.  Stow Wengenroth’s art was exactly what John loved - a detailed, exacting beauty with his use of black and white to express all the color in our environment.

As a mentor, Wengenroth could catch the essence in just a few words and always had a very positive outlook on you as an artist and your art.  Moreover, you could learn quite a bit from Wengenroth’s philosophies on life and art as well.  Stow Wengenroth is greatly missed, but his work in this current exhibition at the Rockport Art Association & Museum celebrates his life, artwork and his contribution to the creative community.

I remember one time when I was working at Tuck’s Pharmacy, I quickly went back to my apartment, grabbed my sketchbook and pencils and joined Wengenroth on the pier to sketch.
