My draw to the ocean's edge during storms on the Atlantic is visceral and hard to explain. When the weather turns and I can hear the surf, I pack my gear and walk to Long Beach in Rockport. Some days I find dark water in low light, or the wind tearing spindrift off a cresting wave. If the storm clears, I sometimes stay for the sunlight to break through. Once, a collapsing breaker drenched me while I stood in the white water. Standing on shore in howling wind, with waves pounding in, I feel strangely calm. The storm quiets everything else and lets me focus on the photography. Every storm has its own personality, and every wave carries it. I want to share the feeling of standing at the edge of a spirited sea when it's at full strength.
