Gouache is a versatile, opaque watercolor paint that dries to a velvety mat finish and can be reactivated after drying. Learn step by step how to enjoy this fun and popular medium through easy-to-follow sketchbook exercises, demonstrations, and one-on-one guidance. No painting experience needed—just bring your supplies and start your gouache adventure!

Beginners Level.  Space is limited.

Supplies: 

SKETCHBOOK 

• A small watercolor sketchbook/journal. Something in the 5x8in or 6x9in size is good to start with. Up to 8x10 is fine. The paper weight of the journal should be 140lb or higher. 

• Some brand suggestions: Pentallic, Etchr, Hahnemühle, Canson XL, Speedbook…many others I prefer to use a Pentallic sketchbook with stitched binding that lays flat to create a two-page spread that can accommodate panoramic scenes, but spiral or other bind is fine. 

BRUSHES 

• You can easily get away with your cheap watercolor brushes - a variety of synthetic watercolor brushes will work. Sizes to consider: flat - 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, rounds - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 

• You can get a “set” of 4 or 5 brushes that'll include a couple of rounds and a couple of flats in different sizes. 

GOUACHE PAINTS 

• I mostly use Winsor & Newton Designer’s Gouache, but if you have something different, that’s okay. Random brand gouache “sets” are available more cheaply and this is fine to use, especially if you're not ready to commit to Gouache painting! 

COLORS: Since we’ll be working with a limited palette, a small basic set of two of each “primary” colors will do.

• 2 blues: Primary Blue and Ultramarine 

• 2 reds: Primary Red and Spectrum Red 

• 2 yellows: Primary Yellow and yellow ochre and/or permanent yellow deep 

• Zinc White and/or Titanium(Permanent) white - you’ll use a lot of white! 

• Ivory Black 

Optional: 

• Permanent Green Middle 

• Any other colors you already have or like. 

PALETTE: 

• I use the Mijello Airtight Watercolor 18-Well Blue Palette, which cuts down on paint waste. You can also use palette paper or any white watercolor palette (a plastic white plate even works) A small airtight palette with “wells” for the paint will work. 

MISCELLANEOUS:

• A plastic container for dipping brushes in water

• Spray bottle of water

• Paper towels or rags, a sponge or baby wipes (optional) Artists tape (easily lifts off paper to reveal a clean edge) Variety of pencils or pens 

• Black marker or sharpie 

• Binder clips to hold sketchbook pages
