Registration Deadline: February 21

This one day, intensive painting class will introduce you to the classical techniques of grissaille underpaintings and oil glazing. We will complete a single painting using an umber and white underpainting, then move on to glazing techniques with thin, transparent washes of color to achieve a luminous affect. Throughout the workshop, we’ll take time to analyze the elements of drawing, design, and value sensitivity. Our goal is to simplify the painting process and create a work with mood, atmosphere and poetic depth. This workshop is packed with time-tested information, with techniques invaluable to beginners and advanced painters alike.
All skill levels welcome. Space is limited.
Suggested Materials
Palette, Surface, & Medium
Wood or glass palette, avoid paper palettes.
8” by 10” Stretched canvas, canvas or linen mounted on board or gessoed wood panel. Avoid Michaels gessoed panels.
Liquin original (quick dry Alkyd medium)
Paint
Split primary palette ( warm & cool reds, warm & cool yellows, warm & cool blues) or whatever collection of paints you already have is perfect for this workshop.
If you wish to add to what you have, here are the paints I use:
Alkyd Titanium White (Alkyd is a quick dry paint that plays nice with oils).
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red medium
Alizarin Crimson Permanent.
Dioxizine Purple
Ultramarine blue
Cerulean Blue
Sap Green (alternative).
Ivory Black
(Pro-tip: Winton is student grade, please don't buy this as it is filled with a lot of binder, filler and less pigment).
Brushes
Medium and small sizes in three styles: Flats, Rounds and Filberts. I mostly use Robert Simmons Signet series flats #3, #6
Small synthetic rounds for details. I suggest Winsor and Newton Septre Gold 2 in the 404 series...size 4 and / or size 6
Chip brushes, quarter inch, half inch or up to two inch for broad areas. Look for these at the hardware store, avoid the most expensive options.
Other
Bring a table easel or portable standing easel if you already have one. The RAA&M Studio has standing easels available for workshop participants.
Trowel type Palette knife
Gamsol (Turpentine substitute) with container or medium glass jar.
RAA&M does not allow turpentine in our Studio
Blue shop towels preferred, paper towels fine substitute
Soft pencil, eraser and sketchbook
Ruler, straight edge or a mahl stick (something to make straight lines)
Paint box or other carrying case for supplies
Wet paint carrier. PanelPaks are lightweight and convenient, clean pizza boxes are budget friendly.
