Painting on location in Rockport, this two-day workshop with Sam Vokey will focus on the initial stage of laying in the composition, getting the values right, and paying attention to color.

Sam will paint a demo on the first morning and you can witness his direct impressionistic approach. Watching an experienced artist paint the first stage of a painting is one of the most instructive things you can do to improve your own painting. Sam will keep up a lively dialogue answering questions as he goes. After the demo, each of you will set up and work on your own paintings as Sam gives you guided instruction, tips, and strategies along the way. Painting landscapes over consecutive days will help you to produce your best work. At the end of the second day, we will all get together and have a critique session where we look at all the work and discuss what we have accomplished.

Participants may paint in any medium. The painting demonstration will be in oil.

All skill levels are welcome. Space is limited.

Please bring your preferred plein air painting materials.

Enjoy two days of watercolor painting on gorgeous Cape Ann with Bill Lane. Bill will start with an on-site demo, reviewing equipment, talking about the chosen scene and why, planning the composition, and determining the values. After which (roughly 11:00 AM), you will head off to paint at a nearby location of your choice. Bill will be around providing individual attention throughout the day. We will have an informal critique around 3:00 PM on location.

Specific painting locations on Cape Ann will be determined closer to the date.

Some watercolor and plein air experience is recommended. Space is limited.

Recommended Watercolor Materials – Bill Lane

PAPER:
• Professional, 100% cotton watercolor paper!
I use Arches and Saunders 300# - mostly Rough but sometimes Cold Press. 140# is fine but always use a good sheet of 100% cotton watercolor paper - no junk! You’ll never learn to paint watercolors on cheap paper, trust me! And, painting outside has enough challenges without fighting your paper too!! Watercolor “blocks” are fine too, and they give you a rigid surface to use on an easel.

• Ultramarine Blue (Winsor & Newton)
• Cobalt Blue (Winsor & Newton)
• Cerulean Blue (M. Graham)
• Cobalt Turquoise (Winsor & Newton)
• Rose Madder Genuine (Winsor & Newton)
• Alizarin Crimson (Winsor & Newton)
• Cadmium Red (Winsor & Newton)
• Cadmium Yellow (M. Graham)
• Cadmium Yellow Lemon (Holbein)
• Burnt Sienna (Winsor & Newton)
• Raw Sienna (Winsor & Newton)

BRUSHES:
• Mostly rounds (16, 12, 8, 6) with good points (I use Escoda Perla brushes.)
• Mop (I use a 14 and 18 Escoda Aquario and a 4 Da Vinci Casaneo.)
• A hake
• A few flats
• A rigger

MISC.:
• Water for painting
• Paper towels
• Pencil (and eraser)
• Container for brushes

• Painting board, if you’re not using a block of watercolor paper
